With more ups and downs than 12 starters in a four-mile steeplechase, Salmo finally stamped himself a true contender.
And the locally-bred horse did it at a most opportune time.
Irv Naylor’s timber veteran won Saturday’s $100,000Virginia Gold Cup in near-record time — 8:24 3/5 for the 4 miles, faster than all but two of 22 race winners since the Cup moved to Great Meadow in The Plains in 1985.
In 2006, the Virginia Gold Cup — with a $50,000 purse — attracted three runners. One year later, organizers doubled the prize and came up with a field of 12 for Saturday’s 82nd running of the timber classic.
