There’s a season for everything, and this is the season when high school seniors—as well as most of the staff and volunteers at Headwaters—are focused on college plans and college financing. This month’s column will be devoted to the exciting news about Next Step scholarships.

The Board of Directors of Next Step had the great pleasure on Saturday, May 5, of considering scholarship applications submitted by local students who will be attending college in the fall. Next Step, the Rappahannock County College and Career Access Program, is a partnership between Headwaters and the Rappahannock County Public Schools. It was established in 2005 to make sure all students have the resources they need to create and carry out the college, vocational, or career plan that’s right for them.
For many families, there is a significant gap between how much a student will need to attend college and the financial package they can assemble through savings, aid from the college, student loans, and how much the student can earn by working. Often, even though colleges have differing tuition costs, the gap does not change from one college to another. This
