A recent study shows that people who are grieving the death of a loved one from natural causes experience a greater sense of yearning than depression. This finding contradicts the traditional wisdom that depression is the primary emotion felt after loss. Study participants were followed for up to two years, during which time researchers tested the theory that people respond to loss by moving through disbelief, yearning, anger, depression, and acceptance, with depression being the dominant negative emotion. While yearning was found to be more strongly felt than depression, acceptance was the most powerful emotion of all.
