Every 58 minutes a child is abused or neglected in Virginia and every twelve days a child dies in Virginia due to abuse or neglect. Foster parents provide a “home away from home” for children who have been removed from their family of origin. “Foster care is reaching out and touching the soul of a child. When I met each of my three foster boys they knew how to define hurt, pain and disappointment with precise meaning. I was able to share those devastating setbacks with them and come up with a game plan based upon devoted time and unconditional love,” according to a foster parent with Children’s Services of Virginia (CSV). “The reward comes when past suffering fades and the child begins to blossom into a new life with a brighter future,” according to another foster parent with CSV for almost ten years.
Approximately 33 percent of foster children have parental rights terminated and become eligible for adoption according to Ralph Berry, foster parent trainer with CSV. “Foster parents are changing the world one child at a time,” according to Berry.
