Spotsylvania County Commonwealth’s Attorney William F. Neely informed Harris’s attorney Blair Howard on May 1 that the fingerprint analysis was complete, and the prints did not match Harris’s.
“It’s just really excellent news,” Howard said. “It’s what I knew all along would be the results, but it’s gratifying td know they’re in.”
Howard credited Neely with the decision to use testimony from Harris’s alibi and character witness that led Spotsylvania authorities to choose not to prosecute the case in January.
“You’ve got to salute him, too,” Howard said.
The situation surrounding the fingerprints was one unusual component of an ordeal that was bizarre from start to finish.
After being arrested for the crime in mid-November, Harris spent one night in the Rappahannock County Jail and another night in the Rappahannock Regional Jail in Stafford County.
But Harris’s fingerprints were not taken at either location, he said, and he was not notified of the evidence until December, when law-enforcement officials finally recorded
