Salmo had actually earned himself a bit of a reputation as an inconsistent jumper over timber.
After winning over hurdles at the 2003 fhll Gold Cup meet for breeder and then-owner Sara Collette, Salmo was sold to Naylor as a timber prospect. He was third in the 2004 International Gold Cup stakes, a bit of a stretch for the gelding, still a maiden over timber, but the placing gave *a hint of the horse’s potential.
Salmo won at Geneseo in 2005, but seemed to develop a habit of jumping untidily, falling hard in the ‘05 International Gold Cup and ‘05 Pennsylvania Hunt Cup.
The next year was also up and down. Salmo ran out and stopped at the Grand National, sending jockey Roger Horgan to the hospital with a broken leg. Salmo returned a few weeks later to win at Winterthur with Chip Miller up, and won again at Radnor with Robbie Walsh. But that autumn, Salmo fell at Shawan Downs with Matt McCarron and earned the unkind nickname Slama
