A student came into my office
last week. This is a young woman who was accepted to two of her top choice schools. She’s done with the SATs and its maddening little bubbles. Never again will she have to describe herself in 300 words. Gone are the days of touring campuses, scheduling interviews, and filling out applications while applying for schol- . arships and maintaining her GPA and working on the weekends and picking out a prom dress. She climbed the College Application Mountain and what was waiting for her there, at the top? Does she now say, “Ahhhhh! It was all worth it!” No, she says, “Every time I think about college, I feel sick.”
And, this is a girl who got in.
This is a tough time for seniors. This is a tough time for their parents. The best case scenario is that the child got in to his first choice school. Now, all he or she has to worry about •is paying for it and getting there.
The next best scenario is that the child got in somewhere and isn’t too devastated about it.
