Rappahannock County High School, the supervisors had one final opportunity to ask Chappell and School Board members questions about the proposed budget.
Most of the questions related to how teacher salaries in Rappahannock compare with those in surrounding counties and the possibility of reducing the number of school employees in the face of declining enrollment.
Chappell predicted an average enrollment of 995 students for next year.
Frazier questioned the likelihood of that number, saying he thinks enrollment will be about 20 students lower, based on previous years’ declines.
On March 30, the county schools had 991 students enrolled, Chappell said. That is the number that determines the per-student funding from the state.
The Virginia Department of Education predicted an enrollment of 1,030 students for Rappahannock next year. But Chappell said he considered that unrealistic and lowered the number to 995, though that number may also end up being higher than actual enrollment.
