The environmental information identifies cropland, pastureland, open land, coniferous and deciduous forest types, water bodies and developed land on an eight-tenth of an acre basis for each tax map area. In Rappahannock County, approximately 214.000 data items are identified on computer print-outs and will be shown in map form and color photographs.
•‘We received the preliminary drafts and we were amazed at the detail,” said Capelle. “Farm ponds as small as one-quarter of an acre show up.” He noted that if the LANDSAT photos had been taken in May when apple and peach trees were in bloom, it would even be possible to delineate orchards.
“We’re hoping to do it again in five years," Capelle said. This second inventory of environmental data will be more refined since it will have a quarter-acre basis instead of eight-tenths of an acre. ‘‘We'll be able to monitor the changes in the region," the planning commission director added.
Capelle noted that the LANDSAT information does not differentiate as well between developed land uses as it does between natural resources. After corrections in this area, the data will be available for local government, agency and general public use, he concluded.
