Ask the average American racegoer what was the most memorable event of 1981 and he’ll probably tell you John Henry’s pose victory at Arlington Park in August or Pleasant Colony’s startling upset at Churchill Downs in May. But ask the same question to anyone lucky enough to be at Foxfield on October 17 and the answer is inevitable — the almost unbelievable match race between Zaccio and Sailor’s Clue in the Grand National.
This one was almost too good to be true. It brought together two brilliant young ’chasers at the peak of their powers and matched them together over two miles and five furlongs and 16 perfectly manicured fences. They went at each other like two great veteran boxers, first poking and prodding each other for weaknesses during the early going then turning on the speed and each trying to overpower the other in the final stages.
In the end it was the invincible Zaccio in front by a nose and yet both horses shared equally in the accolades that followed.
