The girls from RCHS played their hearts out before an enthusiastic home crowd Tuesday night, only to come up short, 52-64, against the Brentsville Tigers.
“They must have shot 80 percent tonight.” said Coach Teresa McLawhorn. “They really shot well and it really hurt us.”
In the first half, it looked like the Panthers would end up in the winners' circle for the first time this season. Guard Donna Atkins unleashed two from the corner in the opening seconds to put Rappahannock on top, 4-0. Natalie Butler hit from the same spot and Kim Settle bombed from way outside, bringing the booster section alive with whistles and cheers of”Let’s go Rapp!”
At the four minute mark in the quarter, the Panthers were in control with a 10-2 edge. Atkins fired a low trajectory bullet from the top of the key and then Karen Iordan fo'ilhd her range, connecting from the comer and muscling her way inside to stretch the lead to 20-12 by the end of the first period.
