at Fairfax
BY DON HINTZ The 25th annual fall meeting of the Fairfax Hunt Steeplechase Races will be held at the beautiful Belmont Plantation on September 25,1982. The first race is 2 p.m. Belmont Plantation originally was acquired by Thomas Lee of Strafford as a royal grant. It descended to Flora Lee, newphew of Francis Lightfoot Lee, both signers of the Declaration of Independence. Ludwell Lee, who was an aid to Lafayette during the American Revolution, built the manor house about 1800. President Madison took refuge at Belmont after the British seige of Washington in the War of 1812, and Lafayette was a guest during his 1824-5 visit to America.
Modem owners of Belmont included Edward Beale McLean, and Gen. Patrick J. Hurley, President Hoover’s secretary of war. After renting it to the Philippine government in exile for a year during World War II, General Hurley sold the estate to George C. Clark in 1943. It is presently owned by the IBM Corporation and is also used during the season, as the departure point for many of the Fairfax Hunt meets.
