Burke, who will run the store with his wife Jean, is not new to the grocery business. He’s been a storekeeper for 27 years and was formerly co-owner of the Sperryville Corner Store.
Those who shopped there are aware of Burke’s skill as a butcher. The Burkes plan to offer custom meat cutting and special savings on butcher shop items each week. “I just love the grocery business," Burke said. “I’m glad to be back.”
At the grand opening two weeks ago. local people turned out in numbers to patronize the ‘‘new Burkes” at Burke’s store. Fifteen cases of chickens were sold, cars were lined up as far as the eye could see, and a door prize of $50 was awarded to Jerry King of Woodville.
All in all, the Burkes considered it a huge success, and the steady stream of Rappahannock people coming and going even on a weekday morning shows that they agree.
"We want to serve everybody," Burke said. “I'm glad we're in a position to do that.”
