In one of the most beloved parts of the ceremony during the Seder meal, the family traditionally leaves the door open for the prophet Elijah to enter. An extra glass of wine is left on the table for him. Elijah, if he were to enter, would announce the coming of the Messianic age, a time of hope, peace and freedom awaited by Jews since the beginning of their history.
The expectation of Elijah is viewed by each family in different ways. Some families literally believe in the predicted appearance of the prophet; others see this ritual as a symbol of a change in the world towards brotherhood and love.
