denoting the French influence at the time, and the name of the estate means “at the foot of the Mountain” in French. The late William du Pont (Mrs. Scott’s father) purchased Montpelier in 1900. In 1902, when she was eight, Montpelier became Mrs. Scott’s home. In short order, she and her brother, the late William, Jr., enjoyed ponies at Montpelier, and both children embarked on life-long involvement with horses.
