The third Morven Park meeting will be run over the course just off Route 15 two miles north of Leesburg with post time at 2 p.m. Dry weather that has kept some timber horses at home during the early meetings will play hand in making the S. H. Rogers Memorial one of the highlights of the season, according to observers. The race will be at three and a quarter miles over timber.
The Maryland National Bank, sponsor of the $5000 brush race bearing its name; Dowty Rotol, an international manufacturing concern which will sponsor a $2500 brush event; and J. R.’s Restaurant, lending its name and backing to a two-mile brush race for maidens, are the firms that have lent support to the Morven Park races.
Morven Park is the newest of Virginia’s steeplechase courses having been completed in 1980 on land provided by the Westmoreland Davis Foundation which maintains the 1200-acre estate. Morven Park was the home of former governor of Virginia whose name the foundation bears.
It is one of the few courses in steeplechasing affording all spectators a view of the entire race. It is situated on rolling terrain north and east of the Morven Park mansion and adjoining the Morven Park International Equestrian Institute.
