Jack W. Raybourne. Chief of the Commission’s Game Division, has expressed concern over the steadily increasing incidents of rabid animals being reported throughout the Commonwealth and especially in the northern Virginia area. According to figures released by the State Department of Health, the number of confirmed rabies cases statewide is 42f as of this week.
These include 362 raccoons, 27 skunks, nine foxes, seven cats, nine bats, two dogs, four groundhogs and one ferret. Four counties in the northern Virginia area account for about 90 percent of the total. Fairfax County has reported 106 rabid animals: % raccoons, two skunks, four foxes, three bats and one ferret.
In Fauquier County the count is 39 total: 32 raccoons, two skunks, two foxes, two cats and one bat. Loudoun County has 205 confirmed cases comprised by 191 raccoons, three skunks, two foxes, two cats, four groundhogs, one dog and two bats.
