The Rappahannock County Garden Club journeyed by bus, Wednesday, September 15. to Wakefield, birthplace of George Washington, and to Stratford Hall, the birthplace of Robert E Lee.
The Garden Club has for its theme this year "History in my Garden” and this tour was to acquaint members with the gardening practices of the 18th century, as well as to enjoy the splendor of the old homes.
Both estates are run as working farms, but Wakefield is operated in the 18th century manner, with a team of oxen for plowing and no modern machinery to help in the gardens. All cooking is done in the kitchen house fireplace.
The group of 39 members and guests were met by guides, given introductory slide shows and shown through each of the great houses.
At Stratford, the head gardener gave a tour of the grounds. Stratford has a beech tree as old as the house which was built in 1725. It is reported to be the oldest tree in Virginia. There are also hundreds of ancient boxwoods and a nature walk featuring over 6000 wild flowers which bloom in the spring.
Donations Sought
There are ladies at a local nursing home who have busyfingers but nothing to do. In response, the VPI Extension office in Washington is collecting spools of threat and material scraps suitable for making quilts, pot holders and aprons. Anyone with materials to donate can leave them at the Extension office during regular business hours.
