Last year’s “single A” state champions. Stonewall Jackson, slipped past Rappahannock, 27-29, in a tri-school cross country meet held last Wednesday at Stonewall. Page High School, competing with only five varsity runners, trailed far behind with 88 points.
"It’s the closest we’ve ever come to Stonewall,” coach Ann Spieker said of Rapp’s performance against the cross country powerhouse.
But despite the Panthers’ impressive tally in the point column, times were slow. Scott Keithley, Rappahannock’s number one ' runner who set a new school record of 14:56 last week on the 2.7 mile Blue Rock Farms course, finished Stonewall’s 2.9 miles in 17:5^. Army Pfc. Peter Ruzich, son of Lt. Col. and Mrs. Rudolph L. Ruzich of Boston, is one of more than 100,000 U. S. soldiers and airmen participating in the U. S. Army REFORGER, or return of forces to Germany, and the U. S. Air Force Crested Cap exercises in Europe.
U. S. service members in Europe, as well as those from the United States, join their NATO partners in ground exercises centering on central West Germany east of the Rhine River. The joint exercises are designed to demonstrate U. S. capabilities to reinforce Europe with NATOcommitted ground and air units in a crisis situation. Ruzich is a cavalry scout with the 1st Armored Division in Schwabach, West Germany.
