pond here, (won't say where) and there is one tremendous bass in it. I have had he-orshe four times and have yet to land that fish. One of these days I will walk over the crest to the pond and see a nine or ten year old boy, with a sapling pole, maybe a bent straight pin, pull that bass ashore. I will take a picture of the boy and his bass, congratulate him, then go home and sulk for three or four days. I’ll get over it though, because when I was a little boy, I did the same thing to my uncle, who I thought was the greatest fisherman who ever lived. (I guess he got over it after awhile, but never told me).
Don’t let me throw you people off about artificial lures, fancy rods, and all sorts of controversial knowledge.
The main thing is; get out there, take the kids, have a picnic. All you need is a pole, line, hook, cork float might help, don’t even need a sinker. Get a few worms out of the garden, if the ground is dry and you don't want to dig. lay newspapers flat on the ground, water it very well the night before you go fishing, go out the next morning, lift the newspaper, and see what you find. You might be surprised. Also, grasshoppers, grubs, etc. You never know what old “Bigmouth” might like that day.
I might add one thing to this fishing article (which might be questioned by some): the best way to balance a pond by fishing is to keep one bass for every twenty-five blue-gills-bream or brim caught. This advice is not mine, it comes from experts in the field of fish management.
Another addition is that I don’t like to eat fish. The secret (Kind that I mentioned above is owned by a widow. Everytime I go there to fish and get the okay from her. she says; “I had a feeling when I got up this morning that I was going to have fish for dinner - don’t know why though? She usually gets her two fish, all cleaned and ready for the pan.
Sincerely, I hope this article will spur some of you people up a little. Your gardening should be about over, maybe yet a little work with the apples, but surely you can find a few spare hours, not necessarily early in the morning - could be afternoon.
