The VSB screens each lawyer’s application to insure that he or she is a member of good standing and is covered by malpractice insurance. Lawyers pay a $30 annual fee to be listed with the referral service.
In 1977 the VLRS received 15,645 calls and made 8,631 referrals; in 1981 some 21,717 calls resulted in 14,142 referrals. Ms. Klein reported that by mid-June of this year the VLRS had already received 11,128 calls and made 6,6% referrals. Ms. Klein cited the healthy growth of public participation in the program as a sign that the lawyer referral service has become an established public service in Virginia. “This service will continue help Virginians when they need help quickly and effectively,” she said.
