“Clarke County has developed a sliding scale for evaluating farmland, which could be applicable throughout the rest of Virginia.”
With those words. Margaret Maizel unveiled the LESA system for “scoring” farmland, before the annual meeting of the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection (RLEP), on Friday, Sept. 10. Mrs. Maizel is chairman of the Clarke County (Va.) Agricultural Advisory Committee, and a member of the county’s Planning Commission. She and her husband run a beef cattle farm near Berryville.
LESA stands for Land Evaluation and Site Assessment, and addresses all factors necessary not only to determine whether or not a piece of property should be included in an Agricultural District, but also to identify property suitable for development, highways construction, or other commercial or private use.
