Of the approximately 11,000 practicing members of the Virginia State Bar, about 1,500 lawyers are listed with the referral service.
Here’s how it works. Any citizen of Virginia wanting to find a lawyer can call toll-free 800-552-7977. or if in Richmond 648-4014, from 8:30 A. M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday through Friday. Based on the caller’s description of the problem, the VLRS staff will provide the name and phone number of a lawyer in the caller’s community or an agency that can help. The caller can then contact the attorney and receive onehalf hour of advice for a fee of $20 or less.
Often this initial consultation enables the caller to resolve the problem. If additional legal assistance is required, the caller and the attrrney are responsible for working out any subsequent services and fees. However, there is no obligation to retain the lawyer if additional services are required.
