Operatic Recital
James Morris, young bass star of the Metropolitan Opera, has been engaged to appear in recital as the climactic event of a two-day voice seminar sponsored by the Voice Department of Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music.
Morris will sing a varied recital of operatic arias, lieder. French songs and American classics. The recital has been scherlnlpH for 8:30 o.m.. October 2, in the auditorium of Handley High School. Admission: Adults $7.50, Students $4.00.
Morris will be singing leading roles in seven operas at the Metropolitan this season. He is also in demand as a soloist with orchestras in New York and Chicago in Beethoven’s Ninth, Mahler’s Eighth and Haydn’s "The Creation". He re-created the role of Reverend Olin Blith in Carlisle Floyd’s "Susannah" with three opera companies in the past few years. Shenandoah presented this work three seasons ago.
His performance as Claggart in the American premiere of Benjamin Birtten’s “Billy Budd” at the Metropolitan Opera was proclaimed as “one of the spectacular events in the Met’s recent vocal history” by Alan Rich of the New York Magazine. The London Times' critic wrote “The cast was led by one masterful performance: that of James Morris' Claggart. The sepulchral, intense blackness of the man was coiled into Morris’ voice and his demeanor, and he Amoved in evil over the face of the earth.
