Roof Repair

The Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors gave its okay for the Rappahannock School Board to secure bids to replace the roof over the auditorium at Rappahannock High School.
The matter of the roof and the school budget went to public hearing Monday (See related story, School).
Ramcorp was awarded a consultant contract in January to evaluate the condition of the roofs on Rappahanndck Elementary School and RCHS for the purpose of budget development. A month later they reported serious concerns about the roof at RCHS. They also recommended an evaluation by a structural engineer immediately. The concern was that the roof has multiple layers which have become saturated. The roof weight coupled with the added weight of new air conditioning units created a structural hazard and is in direct violation of the building code, which does not allow a third layer.
Additionally, the weight of snow on the roof could possibly cause collapse and therefore school could not be held 3i#mg snow days. ' An engineer’s report, by Ralph R. Fitzwater of Engineering Construction Support, Inc. in Marshall, was then made, followed by a clarifying letter in March, which found that the joists were loaded beyond the safe limit. But, that the roof is safe as long as there is no snow weight on it. It suggested correcting the problem by restoring the roof to its original weight, in which case the AC units would be acceptable.
Clearly, a decision had to be reached about the auditorium roof. So, the School Board looked at options for a new roof. Ramcorp made a roof survey, evaluation and recommendation. The School Board sought additional information on roofing for the building and did a feasibility study. It became evident that the cost for the roof would far exceed the $60,000 proposed in the budget for roof repair. Ramcorp provided bid specs and armed with these they went to the BOS.
