Unique Cup

The Virginia Gold Cup may have years of classic tradition on the supporting cast of the May 3 National Steeplechase Association race meeting, but each of the five other races on the program will feature unique competition with something for just about, everybody.
The day opens with pony races for junior riders. Divisions for small, medium and large ponies are slated, with possible combinations if entries are light.
Hurdlers, steeplcchasing’s fast and furious starting point for most, will select from three different races on the Gold Cup card. Maidens, or horses which have not won a race over hurdles, will race 2 1/4 miles for a $15,000 purse. Conditions in the NSA spring race book states if entries warrant, the race will be split into two divisions. Great Meadow will run up to 16 maidens at a time.
