thoroughbred has done in 115 years: win the Derby after never having raced at two. Pulpit’s connections include owner Claiborne Farm, who won the Derby with Swale in 1984, trainer Frankie Brothers, and jockey Shane Sellers. Though both are searching for their first win in the Churchill classic, they are wellrespected professionals who should win a Derby some day. This might be the year.
There is strong local support for Captain Bodgit, the only horse to ever finish ahead of Pulpit when he won the grade 1 Florida Derby. “The Captain” followed (hat with an easy and impressive win on an off-track in the Wood Memorial in his last start. He has what’s called in the trade “a tendon,” but it has never hampered his running.
Crypto Star is a come-frombchind horse in a race that figures to have a lot of early speed. Winner of the Louisiana and Arkansas Derbys in his last two starts, he’s following the same trail as last year’s Derby winner Grindstone. He should be 15 lengths back in the early stages, but under “Patient” Pat Day, he could make a lot of serious noise in the stretch. The smaller field this year is a definite plus as he will have fewer horses to avoid when he makes his big run.
