The introduction of plastic and steel framed artificial fences with foam rubber take-off rolls were another boon to steeplechasing. First used in 1973, these “national fences,” caused much controversy at the time. Quickly adopted, however, the easily transported and set-up fences provided a consistent standard of obstacle for horses to jump. Like commercial sponsorship, national fences have been instrumental in the sport’s continued growth.
