• Origin — Mr. Fredrik Wachtmcister, trophy committee chairman, found the gold-plated silver cup made by silversmiths Digby Scott and Benjamin Smith about 1796. The cup had originally belonged to a titled family in England.

Seventh — Next Winning Owner
The current Virginia Gold Cup challenge trophy, won in the Grand National at Aintrcc, England, in 1903 was obtained in 1984 as a donation of the Jockey Club of The Ritz Carlton Hotel in Washington. The trophy was made by Elkington & Company of London in 1900. It was placed in American timber racing competition at the Virginia Gold Cup in 1985, and must be won five times by the same owner, not necessarily in consecutive years or with the same horse.
Ann Stern’s Saluter, nominated to this year’s race, is just 9 years old and may be considered a favorite to retire this trophy.
