1954 — Kennedy Sees Biggest Field — U.S. Senator and Mrs. John F. Kennedy came to see ihc largest field of horses to date (IS) siart in the Gold Cup.
•967 — Leeds Don Retired fifth Gold Cup for David L. Ferguson of Hume, after winning in three consecutive years — the first horse in Virginia Gold Cup history to accomplish this feat.
1972 — The Great Joe Aitcheson Jr, rode to win his final record-setting eighth Virginia Gold CuP on eight different horses (1957, I960, 1961, 1964, 1967, *968, 1971 and 1972).
1975 — One Finisher — Chapel Street, owned by Paul Mellon of Upperville, was the only Gold Cup race finisher.
1978 — First Gold Cup Purse Money, $7,500, was paid to the winner.
1979 — First Lady Rider, 16year-old Lisa Coffren of Upper Marlboro, Md. finished third in the race.
1984 _ Sixth Gold Cup Retired in Last Running at Broadview — The Gold Cup was run tor the last time at the Broadview Course, and the sixth Gold Cup Trophy was retired by l)r Joseph M. Rogers of Hamilton with Constantine under Speedy Mnithwick riding his first Gold Gup winner.
1985 — Race Moves to Great Meadow — First year of the race at i he new Great Meadow course. A crowd of 32,00 wa4 dduble the sire ot any race in its history to date.
