1989 — Sold Out — The now annual sellout Gold Cup became an advance tickets only event, ending ticket sales at the gates. For the first lime in history a race was canceled by weather, a powerful lightning storm (not the Virginia Gold Cup timber race).
1990 — On National Television — The Gold Cup was broadcast live on national television for the first time. The day put over $400,000 into the community. A record four timber races were on the race card.
