Silver Charm hasn’t won in his last couple of races, but he ran a huge race last out in the Santa Anita Derby. Forced to attend a quick early pace, he still had something left when Free House rolled past him. Silver Charm fought back to be beaten by an eyelash.
Free House has the look of a horse improving at the right time. While racing immaturely, he still won the Santa Anita Derby. His is a true rags-to-riches story as his sire, Smokester, stood for $500 when Free House was conceived, and that price was attractive enough to attract only nine mares.
Concerto, owned by New York Yankee owner, Geoige Steinbrenner, is a talented horse who might be overlooked in this talented lineup. Winner of the Jim Beam Stakes as well as the Federico Tesio, his victory would place “the Boss” in elite company. Only one other owner has won the World Series and the Kentucky Derby, the late John W. Galbreath, owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates and 1967 Derby winner, Proud Clarion.
It would be a major upset if one of the other horses in the field were to win. With the possible exception of Pacificbounty, none of the others have the credentials to win the big race.
