Cup’s second year that racing over timber is not a kamikaze exercise. It can be the most exciting form of racing. I feel it is a great honor that the Virginia Gold Cup committee has decided to twin their long-established prestigious race with the Marlborough Cup in only its third year running.
“It is an expression of great confidence on the part of the Americans that we have established a safe and challenging timber race in the United Kingdom,’’ he added.
Irv Naylor was equally bouyant about the series and its chances for worldwide success. ‘The exceptional financial bonus and trophy and the distinction of winning the [first ever] World Timber Championship should entice existing timber horse owners and will surely stimulate interest among those who are not, but probably should be!” He added that, further, the series wass certain to arouse interest in jump racing in general by linking the cradle of steeplechasing to the strong modem sport in America.,
“Konrad, Nick and myself are very excited about the prospects for this challenge-bonus-title,” Naylor said. “The Marlborough Cup and Virginia Gold Cup are a great match.”
