The Tiger Valley home of Charles and Roberta Jenkins could have burned down the early morning of April 19 if they had not been alerted by a smoke detector.
Mrs. Jenkins said the sound of the smoke detector awoke her at 1:30 a.m. At first she thought that maybe the batteries were going dead in it, and she started to open it to check on them, but then she saw flames in the garage. She called 911 on a cell phone, then woke up her husband.
Luckily there is a firewall between the house and the attached garage. She didn’t open the door to the garage because the winds were so strong it could have spread the fire.
Fire trucks arrived on the scene from Washington, Flint Hill and Sperryville. Firefighter Ann Spieker of Washington said that they got the fire under control, and
