While Virginians interested in horses focus on the 75th running of the Virginia Gold Cup, another horse race about 500 miles from Great Meadows will captivate the rest of the nation.
It’s a coincidence of the calendar that the Kentucky Derby and the Virginia Gold Cup are held on the same day. The founders of each race lound the first Saturday in May a likely candidate for great weather in both states. Most of the time, they are right.
Folk lore of some time ago said that Kentuckians would not run their signature race until the Virginia version was completed. It sounded like officials at Churchill Downs were standing around, phone in hand, calling every few minutes to see if the Gold Cup had been run. Actually with a post time of 5:37. the Derby should tollow the Gold Cup by about an hour.
As lar as handicapping this year s Derby, the race seems to be wide open. In the past few weeks the probable contenders have embellished their records as they head for the most famous race in America.
As a group, this class is gaining increasing respect among horse professionals. Kentucky-bred Pulpit is likely Derby favorite, and he enters the race having won four of his five career starts.
