“We don’t ask people to come and talk about Vietnam — most want to forget the war. We’re there to try and encourage families and friends to support veterans and to encourage our members to get involved in their communities. We consider ourselves famil,” said Sam Thompson, charter president of the Piedmont Area Chapter, VVA.
“We even have chapters in prisons for inmates. We don’t discriminate, many of our members are family members of veterans or friends who want to help. It helps to be around people who understand you, as if you were family. And, many veterans find they connect on a deeper level to those who know where they’ve been and can understand it,” he said.
