Owned by Pennsylvanian George Strawbridge Jr.’s Augustin Stables, the gray 7-year-old son of Woodman was bred by Louise and L.S. Smith. Strawbridge’s stepdaughter Sanna Neilson, herself the first woman to win the Gold Cup in 1991, trains Brankman. Her boyfriend Craig Thornton, former champion jockey in New Zealand, rides.
Brankman started his competition year in Virginia, placing third at the Orange County Hunt Pointto-Point on March 29. He followed up with a close-up second in (he April 19 Middleburg Hunt Cup. Steadily improving, the novice is a good jumper and has speed in his pedigree.
