“The VVA helped veterans of Desert Storm to get proper benefits,” Sam said. “Our experiences helped them get what they needed. We’d already been through it and are still going through it (trying to get proper medical aid and claims decisions). We have even lent them space in our national office to work.”
The VVA puts out a member magazine, recognizes and assists Vietnam era vets and now are desperately looking for women who served in Vietnam, Sam said. “They are concerned that many of them have slipped through the cracks and are not getting help they may need to get their benefits.”
“One reason Vietnam era veterans don’t join the VVA is that they think we’re going to sit around and rehash bad memories. That is not the case. We just want to be there for support if necessary and to help address all the other issues related to service in Vietnam. Also, we want families to get support they may need,” Sam said.
The local chapter is planning a dance for June 14 with Riverbottom band. It will be held in Madison, the location is being finalized. There will be limited seating and the dance will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight.
They will also have a fund raiser special to raise funds for the memorial to be held at Wal-Mart in Culpeper which will feature “Mountain Man” Cliff Lewin’s famous baby back ribs. The event is tentatively planned for June and more information will be forthcoming.
