This is the season when we crave “something different” in foods, whether its for lunch or dinner. Spring is in the air! And, what could be better than a crisp, well-flavored combination salad.
When thinking of a salad, most people start with lettuce. The range of salad greens have increased beyond our imaginations. Once we only thought of Iceburg lettuce or Boston lettuce.
A quick trip to the supermarket and one can find out that lettuces are generally classified into several types, categorized by shape and structure.
Crisphead lettuces usually refer to the Iceberg lettuce. However, you will also find Boston or Bibb, loose leaf lettuce, which grow in loose bunches and include the red and green leaf lettuces. Romaine and Endive lettuces are also available. There are several different types of Endive. Many other lettuces are also available.
