There were a lot of new names as winners in the Fodderstack 10K race on Saturday.
Mark Allen Vann of Winchester was the overall winner with a time of 38:56. The first woman over the line was Terry Sweitzer of Alexandria, with a time of 40:51.
Even though the weather was picture-perfect and ideal for the runners, no one came close to the course records of 31:26 for males and 36:46 for women.
The field of runners was the biggest in the last 10 years, with 262 runners participating out of 280 registered. One runner, Martha Burke, even registered her dog Rufus to run, but only humans are allowed numbers.
Two new Eva L. Smith Memorial winners emerged this year. Mark Ramey of Slate Mills was the first Rappahannock resident over the finish line with a time of 40:11, besting his last year’s time of 40:31. This was his third year to compete in the race.
Susannah McNear of Gid Brown Hollow, a 24-yearold, won her first Eva Smith with a time of 45:20. She had participated in the race four times before, the first time when she was 12, and finally reached her goal of winning the Eva Smith this year. She runs for the track and crosscountry teams in college also.
Mark won his age group (40-44) and Susannah came in third in her age group (19-29).
Mark Jenkins, who won the Eva Smith last year with a time of 38:15, didn’t run the race this year. But next year, he said that he and his soon-to-be-wife Holly Gangel, another former Eva Smith winner, will be training to compete in next year’s Fodderstack.
At least 42 runners were Rappahannock residents, and RCHS students swept the 13-18 age group for both girls
