To the Editor:
The first full week in May has been set aside and officially proclaimed Correctional Officers’ Week by Governor Allen. It is not only recognized here in Virginia — but nationally by all 50 Governors. During this week, we invite all Virginians to take time to reflect upon, and appreciate, the tremendous service that our Correctional Officers provide to the Commonwealth.
This year’s theme of Steadfast, Safe and Secure reflects the commitment of the over 6,800 men and women who keep convicted felons behind bars and protect the public safety 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Prisons never close for holidays or inclement weather. There are always Correctional Officers standing post at one of Virginia’s 52 facilities throughout the State — always vigilant, always steadfast, always keeping us safe and secure.
Under Governor Allen’s leadership we have made great strides in improving Virginia’s prison system over the last three years: assaults are down; efficiency has improved; and the revolving door of parole has been abolished. We have the most secure, state-of-the-art prisons being built today that will endure for years to come — solidifying our commitment of keeping predatory violent felons behind bars. Theses successes would not have been possible without our dedicated Correctional Officers — and for that I ask you to join me in saluting them.
