Includes rider, saddle, girths and extra equipment (such as breast plates or yokes) but not the horse s bridle nor rider safety equipment (body protector and helmet.) Stars, or “bugs" beside this rider’s name designate him as an apprentice. Three stars equals a 10-pound allowance if the rider has never won a race; until they have won five races, two stars designate a seven-pound allowance; until he wins 10 races, a rider gets one bug, or five pounds off. A trainer must determine if having his horse carry less weight is worth partnering the horse ridden with a less-experienced jockey.
