Gold Cup. New record purses of $120,000 in seven races, included $35,000 in the Gold Cup race.
1993 — Aintree Qualifies Gold Cup Winner — The Virginia Gold Cup received worldwide recognition as the British Jockey Club ruled that the first, second and third place finishers of the race would henceforth automatically qualify as starters in the famed Grand National at Aintree. Virginia Gold Cup paddock dedicated to Nelson C. (Monk) Noland.
1994 — Closed Circuit TV Begins — Closed circuit television monitors were set up in corporate tents for the first time. Over 130 buses and 170 colorful tents dotted the scene. Trophy presented by Virginia governor George Allen.
1995 — First Steeplethon Race ran over a new course. In the Virginia Gold Cup race, Saiuter, owned by Ann Stem of Richmond, set a new course record of 8:27 winning for the second consecutive year.
1996 — Saiuter won his third consecutive Gold Cup under Jack Fisher, who was riding his fifth Gold Cup winner.
