and about once a month need to be trimmed. The farrier uses a long metal rasp to file the feet, nippers to clip off extra length and a hoof knife.to carefully pare the sensitive sole and frog on the underside of the foot.
If a horse is in work, shoes are fitted to protect their hooves from hard surfaces, wear and tear. On the flat track, horses wear aluminum shoes almost exclusively. The thought being any extra amount of weight anywhere, can mean the difference in victory at the wire. Flat track horses train on a conditioned dirt track; good thing, because aluminum shoes would not hold up to time spent frolicking in a pasture or galloping in a field.
Steeplechase horses, on the other hand, train and race over the turf, with many possibilities for pebbles to wear on the shoes. For that reason, many 'chasers train, and some race, in regular hunter shoes made of light steel. Some trainers train in steel shoes
