The date: May 6, 1922. The venue: Oakwood estate near Warrenton. The event: the inaugural running of the Viiginia Gold Cup.
Six horses went postward that mild May 6. Though reports of the race calls throughout the four miles over line fences, creek and road crossings are sketchy, the winner is irrefutable — Katherine Hitt’s Irish Laddie finished first, improving upon a fourth place finish just four days prior in a hunter ‘chase at Belmont Park in New York City.
The date: May 4, 1996. The venue: Great Meadow racecourse near The Plains. The event: the 71 st running of the now classic Virginia Gold Cup. ^
Eight answered the call to the post last year. Professional patrol judges, video technology, photo finish cameras and public address system race commentary made Saluter’s winning display accessible to the masses. They may have come a long way, baby, but from its inception to the 75th anniversary celebration this May 3, the Virginia Gold Cup has retained sporting character certain to carry it into another century of tradition for Fauquier County.
