Colette Alexis adapted Caumery’s comic strip for the stage and came from Paris to direct the show. “Becassine” can be enjoyed at many levels. Adults recognize satire in the comical situations the heroine often faces; children enjoy the perpetual motion of droll characters in colorful costumes and zany makeup; students of French understand all the jokes and appreciate the clarity of diction of the French actors. A knowledge of French is not required to follow the play because it is performed in both English and French-and often in pan- • tomime.
