the Gold Cup were not known, but typically, most owners go ahead and enter for a chance at the big prize. Supplemental entries can be made at the time of entry as well, so an owner can decide after nomination time to go for the Gold. Great Meadow officials set a limit of 20 for the Gold Cup field, so, though it is unlikely to get that many entrants, a few more horses than those handicapped here could be in Saturday’s line up.
Storied Virginia-bred, -owned and -trained Leeds Don set the first Gold Cup mark when he won the 1965, ‘66 and ‘67 renewals of the timber classic. Zeke Ferguson’s galloping gray was seen at the time as something of a freak of nature: never before had a timber horse, typically the older, more experienced jumpers, managed to put together three Cup victories, much less three in a row. Leeds Don was 6 years old when he first won at the old Broadview course.
