History is in grave danger of a rework this weekend when Ann Stern’s Saluter attempts to capture something no horse in the Virginia Gold Cup’s 75-year history has previously: the Virginiabred goes for a fourth consecutive Cup victory.
Saluter and seven other timber specialists were nominated to the $40,0(}O, four-mile timber stakes scheduled at Great Meadow May 3. The National Steeplechase Association accepts nominations to stakes races, which carry not only the game’s highest purse money but also prestige, on the Monday prior to the entry stage. When the list of horses which are fully nominated to a stakes race, horse owners can then decide whether their horse is up to the challenge and enter, when regular entries are taken by the NSA on the Monday prior to the event.
