More experienced hurdle winners have their choice of two selections. An allowance, for non-winners of three prior hurdle races, carries a $20,000 purse and will he contested over 2 3/8 miles. Likewise, a starter handicap — limited to horses which have started for a claiming (or selling) price of $15,000 or less in that past two seasons — is slated over 2 3/8 miles. The purse is $15,000.
Timber runners are not limited to the Gold Cup. Maidens will compete for the $15,000 purse in the day’s second race. Maidens over timber arc simply horses which have not won over the solid obstacles; a horse can have won any amount of money or races on the flat, or over hurdles, and still be considered a maiden over timber.
Two races will share the innovative Sleeplelhon course. Prior to the sanctioned race program, qualified foxhunters will take to a modified stecplethon route. The course consists of 18 natural hunting obstacles including living brush, timber, a coop, a stream ditch jump, sod-lopped stone wall and a nineinch deep 170-foot long stream bed crossing on firm stone dust footing. The race is designed to test speed, jumping ability and agility of contestants, and riders will compete in formal hunting attire.
The i'oxhunlcr race will be run under the sanctioning of the Virginia Steeplechase Association. A $7,500 purse sweetens the pot in the 3 l/2-mile ‘chase. Horses and riders must be qualified field hunters, having hunted at least nine limes last season.
Also taking place over the varied obstacles will be the $25,000 NationsBank Cup steeplechase. Set at three miles, no fence is jumped twice along the route. Proponents of the new “division" for jumping specialists lout the real steeplechase as a perfect venue for a horse with proven athleticism.
