I never thought I would have to come all the way to the USA to meet figure-skaters from my country.
I’m an exchange student from Kazakstan. The skaters I met are Marina Khaltourina, Andrei Krukov (pair figure skating) and Yuri Litvinov (single men’s figure skating). Their coach is Sergei Korovin.
I found out about them from an article in the newspaper “Potomac News," which my YFU Field Manager, Barry Sherry, sent to me. Some time later I wrote a letter to the Ice Fofum in Dale City to the figure skaters and guess what? On one weekend I went to visit them with the help of my area representative, Geneva Welch, her husband and Mr. Sherry. Through this newspaper I want to thank them very much.
Marina, Andrei and Yuri are training for next winter’s Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan. In the end of March they came back from the Figure Skating Championship in Switzerland. Marina and Andrei took 12th place out of 25. All of them did very well (taking into consideration that they are not professionals).
I was so glad to meet them because we were able to speak in my own language. In the day when I went to visit them we went out to the mall and then we went for dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe in Washington, D.C. Everything was fun. It was one of the most exciting things I’ve experienced here.
In addition to this I’d like to say that by being an exchange student, everyone has more opportunities to meet people.
